Joseph Byrd earned Masters degrees in both voice and conducting, as well as the Performer's Certificate in voice, from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He was a member of Open Forum, a group which traveled to high schools in formerly Communist East Berlin, discussing topics such as Religiosity in America, Euthanasia, Sex. vs. Love, and more. He served on Michigan Arts Council's
"ArtServe" program, teaching teachers how to incorporate the arts into social studies curricula, and has published through Earthsongs music.
